ASPON (TM) Usage And Synthesis
DescriptionAspon is an obsolete organophosphate insecticide that was used on turf. It has a moderate aqueous solubility and is highly volatile. Little else is known about its environmental fate and behaviour. There is little published data regarding its ecotoxicity. Aspon is moderately toxic to mammals if ingested. It is an acetyl cholinesterase inhibitor and a neurotoxin.
Chemical PropertiesASPON (TM) is amber liquid. Miscible with most organic solvents; insoluble in water.
UsesInsecticide, acaricide.
UsesASPON (TM) is an organophosphorus, nonsystemic insecticide used to control chinch bugs in lawns
Production MethodsPublicly available information on the manufacturing of aspon is extremely limited. Based on its structure and the documented identity, commercial production would have followed the standard mid 20th century route for dialkyl dithiopyrophosphates: manufacturers first generated a thiophosphoryl chloride or related phosphorus halide, then carried out sequential esterification with propyl alcohol under strictly anhydrous, acid scavenged conditions to form the tetrapropyl thiophosphate framework. A controlled sulphur bridging step produced the dithiopyrophosphate linkage, after which the crude material was purified by solvent washing and vacuum stripping to yield technical grade Aspon for formulation.
HazardHighly toxic.
Mechanism of actionNon-systemic. Acetylcholinesterase (AchE) inhibitor.
Pesticide TypeInsecticide
