| Description | Benzadox is a largely obsolete herbicide that was used to control broadleaved weeds and grasses in sugarbeet crops. Very little data is available regarding its environmental fate, ecotoxicology nor its impact on human health. | | Chemical Properties | Pale Yellow Solid | | Uses | Hippurate analog. Pesticide. | | Production Methods | Benzadox is synthesised through a sequence of acylation and esterification steps typical for amide herbicides. The process begins with benzoyl chloride, which is reacted with hydroxylamine derivatives to form a benzamido intermediate. This intermediate is then coupled with chloroacetic acid or its ester under controlled conditions to introduce the oxyacetic acid moiety, yielding benzadox. The final product is purified by recrystallisation or solvent extraction to achieve high purity suitable for herbicidal use.
