| | BODIPY Usage And Synthesis |
| Application | BODIPY is a fluorescent dye with special chemical properties that has wide applications in the field of bioimaging, where it can be used to observe and study the structure and function of biological samples. | | Synthesis |
BODIPY and its derivatives can be obtained by reacting the corresponding 2,2'-dipyrrolidinylidene derivatives with a boron trifluoride-ether complex (BF3-(C2H5)2O) in the presence of triethylamine or 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU). The difficulty in its synthesis is due to the instability of the usual dipyrrolidinylmethylene precursors rather than to the instability of BODIPY itself.
