| Synthesis | Step 1: 5.00 g (27.0 mmol) of 4-fluoro-3-nitrobenzoic acid was dissolved in 50 mL of saturated ethanolic hydrochloric acid solution (1.25 M) and the reaction was refluxed for 15 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was evaporated using a rotary evaporator. Purification by fast column chromatography [silica gel, eluent petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (4:1)] afforded 5.48 g (25.7 mmol, 95%) of ethyl 4-fluoro-3-nitrobenzoate as a colorless solid. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) Rf = 0.48 [silica gel, petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (4:1)].
