DescriptionFlurtamone is a herbicide used to control broadleaved weeds and grasses. It has a moderate aqueous solubility, low volatility and, based on its chemical properties, is not expected to leach to groundwater. It is not normally persistent in soil or water-sediment systems. It has a low mammalian toxicity and no serious health risks have been identified from the literature. It has a low to moderate toxicity to most terrestrial and aquatic species, with the exception of aquatic plants for which toxicity is high.

Production MethodsFlurtamone is commercially produced through a multi-step synthesis involving substituted anilines and pyrrolidinone intermediates to yield a potent pre-emergence herbicide. It begins with the preparation of key intermediates such as 3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline, which is reacted with dichloroacetyl chloride to form N-dichloroacetyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline. This intermediate undergoes a cyclization reaction with an allyl group under catalytic conditions, often using cuprous chloride or similar catalysts, to construct the pyrrolidinone ring system. The resulting compound, flurtamone is then purified through crystallisation or solvent extraction to ensure high purity and herbicidal efficacy.
