Uses1,4-Anhydroerythritol is a tetrahydrofuran derivative used as a heterocyclic building block in epoxy resins and other polymers. 1,4-Anhydroerythritol is also used in the preparation of nucleotide anal ogs as potential antiviral and anticancer agents.
Uses1,4-Anhydroerythritol was employed in a key step in the synthesis of glucopyranoside-based analogs of adenophostin A lacking the adenine component.
General Description1,4-Anhydroerythritol is a cyclic vicinal diol. 1,4-Anhydroerythritol undergoes hydrodeoxygenation over tungsten oxide-palladium catalysts to yield 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran.
Synthesis

The round-bottom distillation flask was preheated to 240 , 50 g of erythritol crystals and 0.5 g of Amberlyst131 resin were added, the pressure of the distillation flask was adjusted to 0.5 bar, and the reaction was carried out for 2.5 h. The reaction product was transferred to the adsorbent solution containing 15% silica gel, 10% ethyl acetate, and 15% sodium bicarbonate, and the reaction product was stirred for 1 h at room temperature, and then the reaction product was obtained by plate filtration and recrystallization, and the yield was 73.4% and 97.8%. 4-anhydride-erythritol, the yield of 1,4-anhydride-erythritol reached 73.4% and the purity was 97.8% by 1HNMR and GC.
