Step 3: A solution of 2-bromo-1-(4-bromo-2-fluorophenyl)ethanone bromide (1.2 mL, 23.0 mmol) in 10 mL of glacial acetic acid was slowly added dropwise to a solution of 1-(4-bromo-2-fluorophenyl)ethanone (5.0 g, 23.0 mmol) in 150 mL of anhydrous methylene chloride, and the reaction was carried out at 0°C. After dropwise addition, the reaction mixture was slowly warmed up to room temperature. The progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC (unfolding agent: 5% ethyl acetate/hexane) to confirm complete consumption of the feedstock. The reaction mixture was diluted with dichloromethane and washed sequentially with 5% sodium thiosulfate solution and saturated saline. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 2-bromo-1-(4-bromo-2-fluorophenyl)ethanone (6.6 g, 97% yield) as a light green oil.
