Myelin Basic Protein (85-99) peptide antagonist is an antagonistic peptide that competes with MBP (85-99), which is an immune dominant epitope of myelin basic protein (MBP) and a major candidate self antigen in multiple sclerosis (MS). It binds to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) - DR2 and is a peptide composed of 15 amino acids. This peptide also inhibits the secretion of IL-2 by MBP (85-99) - specific T cell clones and induces the production of Th2 cytokines by spleen cells. In addition, it can be demonstrated that the peptide can inhibit experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in several models in an equivalent manner to random amino acid copolymers such as Copaxone [poly (Y, E, A, K) n]. Therefore, this synthetic peptide may be suitable for the study of MS.
