The Myelin Basic Protein (85-99) peptide antagonist is a competitive peptide that binds to MBP (85-99), an immunodominant epitope of myelin basic protein (MBP) and a leading autoantigen in multiple sclerosis (MS). It binds to human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR2 and consists of a 15-amino-acid polypeptide. This peptide also inhibits IL-2 secretion by MBP (85-99)-specific T-cell clones and induces Th2 cytokine production in spleen cells. Additionally, it has been demonstrated to suppress experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in several models in an equivalent manner to random amino acid copolymers (e.g., Copaxone [poly(Y,E,A,K)n]). Therefore, this synthetic peptide may be suitable for MS research.
