ITGAX, also known as integrin alpha X or CD11c, is a transmembrane protein that forms the α-subunit of the heterodimeric integrin receptor αXβ2 (CR4). It pairs with the β2 subunit (CD18) to mediate cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions, primarily in immune responses. ITGAX is highly expressed on the surface of dendritic cells, monocytes, macrophages, and a subset of activated lymphocytes, playing a critical role in leukocyte adhesion, migration, and phagocytosis. Its ligands include ICAM-1. fibrinogen, and iC3b, facilitating pathogen recognition, immune surveillance, and inflammatory processes.

Antibodies targeting ITGAX (CD11c) are widely used in research to identify and isolate dendritic cells and myeloid cell populations in tissues or circulation. They serve as key tools in flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and functional studies to dissect immune cell behavior in homeostasis and disease. In pathological contexts, ITGAX expression is linked to chronic inflammation, autoimmune disorders (e.g., lupus, multiple sclerosis), and cancer. For example, tumor-associated macrophages expressing CD11c may correlate with tumor progression or immune modulation.

Recent studies explore ITGAX antibodies for therapeutic applications, such as blocking leukocyte infiltration in inflammatory diseases or enhancing antigen presentation in immunotherapy. Their specificity makes them valuable for both diagnostic and experimental investigations into immune regulation and targeted therapies.
