This transmembrane protein facilitates the absorption of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), monocarboxylates (e.g., lactate, pyruvate), and iodide across epithelial cells in tissues such as the intestine, kidney, and thyroid. SLC5A8 is notable for its tumor-suppressive role, as its expression is frequently downregulated in cancers like colorectal, prostate, and breast cancer, often due to promoter hypermethylation. This loss is linked to altered metabolic pathways, such as reduced butyrate uptake (a histone deacetylase inhibitor with anti-cancer effects) and enhanced lactate export in tumor microenvironments.
