MECOM antibodies target proteins encoded by the MECOM gene (also known as EVI1), a zinc-finger transcription factor located on human chromosome 3q26.2. Initially identified as an oncogene in murine leukemia models, MECOM plays critical roles in hematopoiesis, embryonic development, and cell cycle regulation. Dysregulation of MECOM, particularly through chromosomal translocations or overexpression, is strongly associated with aggressive hematologic malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), as well as some solid tumors. The gene produces multiple splice variants, with the full-length MECOM protein containing two distinct zinc-finger domains that mediate DNA binding and protein interactions.

MECOM antibodies are essential tools for studying its expression patterns, subcellular localization, and molecular interactions. They enable detection via techniques like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. Specific antibodies may target different epitopes or isoforms, requiring validation for experimental contexts. Research using these antibodies has revealed MECOM's dual role as both an oncogene and a tumor suppressor, depending on cellular context and post-translational modifications. Recent studies also explore its involvement in chemotherapy resistance and stem cell maintenance, highlighting its therapeutic potential.
