Plectin is a versatile cytoskeletal linker protein belonging to the plakin family, widely expressed in tissues such as skin, muscle, and nerves. It acts as a scaffolding molecule, anchoring intermediate filaments, microtubules, and actin filaments to membrane-associated structures like desmosomes and hemidesmosomes. This function is critical for maintaining cellular integrity, mechanical stability, and signal transduction. Plectin also interacts with integrins and dystroglycans, bridging the cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix.

Antibodies targeting plectin are essential tools for studying its role in cellular organization and disease. Mutations in the *PLEC* gene cause various disorders, including epidermolysis bullosa simplex (skin blistering), muscular dystrophy, and neurodegenerative conditions. Plectin dysfunction is also linked to cancer metastasis due to its involvement in cell adhesion and migration.
