sec-Butylbenzene is used as the starting material in the synthesis of 2-(p-sec-Butylphenyl)propionic Acid; an impurity of Ibuprofen. sec-Butylbenzene is also used as the sole carbon and energy source for certain Pseudomonas bacteria strains.

生产方法
由苯与仲丁基氯反应而得。将无水苯和无水的氯化铝搅拌冷却，在0-5℃滴加仲丁基氯，加完后继续搅拌反应1h。搅拌下加入冷水，将反应混合物进行水蒸气蒸馏。馏出液分去水，干燥后再分馏，收集171-173℃馏分即得成品，产率77%。 用作涂料和有机合成溶剂、增塑剂、表面活性剂。
