Basiliximab is a chimeric (mouse/human) monoclonal antibody that functions as an interleukin-2 receptor alpha (IL-2Rα, CD25) antagonist. It is an immunosuppressive agent approved for the prophylaxis of acute organ rejection in patients undergoing renal transplantation, typically as part of an initial immunosuppressive regimen. The antibody specifically binds to the CD25 subunit of the high-affinity IL-2 receptor complex on the surface of activated T lymphocytes.
