Pritoxaximab is a monoclonal antibody (IgG1 kappa) developed as a specific therapeutic agent against Shiga toxin 1 (Stx1), a key virulence factor produced by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Its mechanism of action involves the high-affinity binding to the B subunit pentamer of Shiga toxin 1. This binding is designed to neutralize the toxin by preventing its interaction with the globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) receptor on the surface of host cells, particularly endothelial cells in the kidney and gastrointestinal tract.
