Aselizumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody of the IgG4 isotype that functions as an antagonist targeting the CD62L receptor, also known as L-selectin. By blocking this adhesion molecule, Aselizumab aims to prevent the extravasation (migration) of leukocytes (white blood cells), particularly neutrophils and monocytes, from the blood vessels into inflamed tissues. The IgG4 isotype minimizes the risk of cell depletion via Fc effector functions. Aselizumab was investigated in the early 2000s for the treatment of inflammatory conditions where excessive leukocyte recruitment drives pathology, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), but its development was discontinued following clinical trials.
