Apitegromab is an investigational, fully human monoclonal antibody designed as a selective inhibitor of latent myostatin activation. It specifically targets and binds to the pro- or latent form of myostatin, a key negative regulator of muscle growth and strength. By preventing the proteolytic activation of latent myostatin into its active form, apitegromab aims to promote skeletal muscle hypertrophy and improve muscle function. It is currently in clinical development (Phase II/III) as a potential first-in-class therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), particularly in patients who remain with significant motor function deficits despite receiving disease-modifying therapies.
