How can hexane be degradated safely and efficiently?

Apr 13,2026

Hexane is a neurotoxic volatile organic compound commonly found in industrial emissions; its hydrophobic nature makes it difficult to biodegrade, thereby posing risks to the environment and human health. Studies have shown that the Rhodococcus qingshengii strain SCJ-1 exhibits a strong ability to degrade hexane. Following optimisation using the Haldane growth model, under conditions of pH 7.0 and 30 °C, strain SCJ-1 was able to degrade 82.3% of a 200 mg·L−1 hexane solution within 48 hours.
