Why do some people stop taking β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide supplements?

May 16,2025

β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN), as a precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), plays an important role in increasing NAD levels. Studies have shown that the intake of NMN can change the composition and vitality of the intestinal flora, restore mitochondrial function, inhibit inflammatory pathways, improve metabolism, fight oxidative stress, and relieve inflammation. It can also significantly improve the recovery of aging-related diseases such as decreased heart function, decreased fertility, memory loss, and diabetes. NMN is both effective and safe in anti-aging.

Despite the benefits of β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, why do some people choose to stop using NMN?

There may be several reasons for this:

(1) Side effects

β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide is generally considered safe, with no reports of serious adverse reactions. Most importantly, no side effects of NMN have been documented in humans. The most common side effects of NMN supplements are gastrointestinal reactions, mainly nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating and stomach discomfort. Upper respiratory tract problems and headaches are relatively rare. It may not be suitable for people with weak gastrointestinal tract.

(2) No obvious benefits after supplementation

Some people stop taking NMN mainly because of the lack of obvious benefits. After several months of continuous use, some people found that the expected improvement in energy levels, cognitive function and overall health did not change significantly, so they stopped using it.

(3) Due to the lack of relevant evidence from long-term or clinical studies, there are concerns about unknown potential safety.

Because of the potential safety issues associated with long-term use, the FDA decided to ban the sale of NMN supplements, and several clinical trials are underway, and the results are unknown. This may also be one of the main reasons why people stop using it.
