As soon as TRIMETHYL PHOSPHITE(121-45-9) contacted a small amount of magnesium perchlorate in a flask, there was a flash and an explosion that shattered the flask (Allison 1968). | [Air & Water Reactions]

retardant, and used as an intermediate in the manufacture
of a number of pesticides, and organophosphorus

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove any
contact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least
15 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek

this chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin
rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including
resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if heart
action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medical facility.
When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention.
Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do
not make an unconscious person vomit. Medical observation
is recommended for 24-48 hours after breathing overexposure,

The reaction of trimethyl phosphite and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate in the presence of dimedone as the proton source/nucleophile leads to 2-(dimethoxy-phosphoryl)-3-(2-hydroxy-4,4-dimethyl-6-oxo-cyclohex-1-enyl)-succinic acid dimethyl ester in 91 % yields.

Treat the phosphite with Na (to remove water and any dialkyl phosphonate), then decant and distil it with protection against moisture.
