2-Mercaptopyridine-3-carboxylic acid may be used for the synthesis of poly[[diaquabis([μ]2-4,4 ′-bipyridyl)iron(II)] bis{2-[(3-carboxypyridin-2-yl)disulfanyl]nicotinate}] and 2-(2-carboxyethylthio)nicotinic acid. | [Synthesis]

The general procedure for the synthesis of 2-mercaptonicotinic acid from 2-chloronicotinic acid was as follows: a suspension of 2-chloronicotinic acid (790 mg, 5 mmol) and thiourea (457 mg, 6 mmol) was suspended in water (15 mL) and the reaction was carried out at reflux for 8 h at 90 °C. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature to obtain a pale yellow suspension. Subsequently, the pH was adjusted to about 8 with dilute hydrochloric acid and stirred for 10 minutes to precipitate 2-mercaptonicotinic acid as a pale yellow solid. The solid was separated by filtration and dried to give the target product 2-mercaptonicotinic acid (590 mg, 84% yield). | [References]
