Thiourea (2.55 g, 0.033 mol, 1.1 eq.) was added to a solution of ethyl 2-chloro-3-oxobutanoate (5 g, 0.030 mol, 1 eq.) in ethanol (25 mL) at 25 °C. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux and kept for 3 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was slowly cooled to 25 °C under continuous stirring to induce precipitation of the product as a white solid. The precipitated solid was collected by filtration through a Büchner funnel and dried under vacuum to afford ethyl 2-amino-4-methylthiazole-5-carboxylate (4.8 g, 64% yield) as a final fine white powder. | [References]
