5-Methyl-2-hexanone is used as a solvent for the production of high-solids coatings, because it possesses a high solubility for alkyd resins, acrylic resins, cellulose esters, cellulose nitrate, and vinylic copolymers. 5-Methyl-2-hexanone may be used to synthesize N,N′-bis(1,4-dimethylpentyl)-p-phenylenediamine (BMPPD) via reductive alkylation of p-nitroaniline in the presence of copper-based catalysts.

Ketones react with reducing agents such as hydrides, alkali metals, and nitrides to produce flammable gas (H2) and heat. Ketones are incompatible with isocyanates, aldehydes, cyanides, peroxides, and anhydrides. They react violently with aldehydes, HNO3, HNO3 + H2O2, and HClO4.
