Production Methods

Cypromid would have been manufactured using the same multipurpose plant processes applied to other acylanilide type herbicides of the 1960s–1980s. Industrial production began with preparation or procurement of the 3,4 dichloroaniline intermediate, which was then reacted with cyclopropanecarbonyl chloride (or an equivalent activated acid derivative) in a controlled acylation step to form the target cyclopropanecarboxanilide structure. This reaction required dry conditions, acid scavengers, and careful temperature control to manage hydrogen chloride evolution. The crude product was then subjected to neutralisation, solvent exchange, and crystallisation or vacuum drying to yield technical grade cypromid.
