Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate Chemical Properties, Uses, Production
Description
Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate is a highly water-soluble, low-fat-soluble amine-succinic acid dimer chelating agent used in cosmetics to stabilise formulations and chelate metal ions. It is also used in industrial and pesticide applications. Its structure features an ethylamine bridge, which is the primary structural difference between it and tetrasodium iminodisuccinate; this structure confers its chelating ability. Industrially, it is used in plant protection products, as well as in washing and cleaning products (such as detergents, stain removers and kitchen cleaners). It is also approved as an inert ingredient (chelating agent) in pesticide formulations and, under specific conditions, may be exempt from maximum residue limit requirements.
Chemical Properties
Trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate is a solid granule. It is readily soluble in water, with a solubility of ≥1000 g/L at 20 °C and pH 7.
Uses
(2S,2''S)-2,2''-(Ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))disuccinic Acid functions as a chelant used in improving hair health and in preventing free radical formations. It is also used in the making of anti-snoring compositions. A chelants that enhances metal translocation in plants.
Application
Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate is added as a chelating agent to various cosmetic formulations, including toners, blushers, foundation, eye creams, face masks, hair conditioners, lipsticks, bath soaps and cleansers, baby products, and hairsprays. The maximum concentration permitted in hair conditioning and styling products is 0.64%, whilst in skin care products it is 0.56%.
