Description
Clopyralid methyl is a selective herbicide used to control weeds in turf. It is moderately persistent in the environment and, based on its physico-chemical properties, it has high potential to leach to groundwater. Clopyralid methyl tends to be low to moderately toxic to fauna and flora. It has a low mammalian toxicity as a skin, eye and respiratory irritant.
Production Methods
Clopyralid-methyl is produced through an industrial process that mirrors the broader chemistry used for pyridine-carboxylate herbicides, with manufacturers focusing on efficient assembly of the chlorinated pyridine ring and clean esterification to achieve the required purity. Commercial routes begin with production of the 3,6-dichloropicolinic acid core, typically via chlorination and oxidation steps applied to a substituted pyridine precursor, followed by purification to remove regioisomeric and over-chlorinated by-products.
