Production Methods
Mecoprop-dimethylammonium is produced through an industrial route that mirrors other amine-salt versions of phenoxy herbicides, built around generating the acid form and then converting it into a stable, water soluble salt. Production begins with synthesis of racemic mecoprop acid, typically via the established phenoxypropionate pathway used across the 2,4 D/MCPA/MCPP family. Once purified, the acid is neutralised with dimethylamine, usually supplied as an aqueous solution, under controlled pH and temperature to ensure complete salt formation and to avoid esterification or degradation. The neutralisation step yields a concentrated aqueous solution of the dimethylammonium salt, which is then filtered to remove any insoluble impurities and adjusted for active-ingredient content.
