Food additive (veterinary).

Uses

DCU (Dicloralurea) is used in the preparation of monoaromatic derivatives of pulvinic acids which may display antioxidant activity. Component of early pesticides.

Production Methods

Dichloralurea was commercially produced by condensing chloral (trichloroacetaldehyde) with urea under controlled acidic conditions. The process typically involved reacting chloral hydrate with urea in the presence of a catalyst or dehydrating agent, forming the bis-(trichloro-hydroxyethyl)urea structure. This synthesis required precise temperature control to avoid decomposition and was followed by purification steps such as recrystallisation to achieve technical-grade material.

Mechanism of action

Thought to be a photosynthetic electron transport inhibitor at the photosystem II receptor.
