용도
An elastomer(also known as rubber) is a polymer with good elastic properties. They are very soft and deformable at ambient temperature (Young’s modulus <~ 3 MPa). The monomers linking to form the polymer are usually made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and silicon. They are primarily used as sealing materials, to mold flexible parts, and as adhesives. Most elastomers (e.g., natural rubber, polyisoprene, butyl rubber, and Viton) are thermoset, having their stable phase set by an irreversible curing process, in contrast to thermoplastic materials that can be melted and recover their initial properties after cooling down (e.g., vinyl, polyethylene, and polypropylene).
공업 용도
This class of materials, also known as rubbers,can be deformed elastically by a large amountwhen a force is applied to them, and then theycan return to approximately the same shapewhen the force is removed. Most elastomersconsist of long, carbon-containing molecularchains with periodic strong bond linksbetween the chains. Elastomers include bothnatural and synthetic rubbers, which are usedfor auto tires, electrical insulation, and industrialhoses and belts.
