| | Methyl glycolate Usage And Synthesis |
| Chemical Properties | Clear colorless liquid | | Uses | Methyl glycolate is a chemical reagent used in the synthesis of taxol and rapamycin. It is used in leather tanning and textile dyeing. It acts as a flavoring agent, preservative in food processing, in water treatment industries and as chemical intermediates. Further, it is used in emulsion polymers, ink and paint additive to improve flow properties and impart gloss. It plays an important role in producing triisopropylsilanyloxy-acetic acid methyl ester using imidazole as reagent. | | Reactions | Methyl glycolate possesses chemical properties similar to both alcohols and esters, and can undergo carbonylation, hydrolysis, and oxidation reactions.
| | General Description | Synthesis of methyl glycolate from the carbonylation of HCHO using heteropoly acids (HPAs) as catalysts, followed by esterification with methanol was reported. Size-selective vibrational spectroscopy of methyl glycolate clusters was reported. | | Synthesis | Methyl glycolate was synthesized in a single step by reaction of CA with sodium hydroxide and methanol in an autoclave reactor. The highest MG yield of 81.4% was obtained under suitable conditions of 8:1:1 methanol: sodium hydroxide: CA (molar ratio), after 5 h at 150 °C, in a laboratory autoclave reactor. |
