Androstenedione is a steroid hormone produced in testes in the ovary and in the adrenal cortex. Androstenedione is a precursor of testosterone and estrone. Androstenedione originates either from the conversion of dehydroepiandrosterone or from 17-hydroxyprogesterone. Androstenedione (ASD) is a biomarker used in the diagnostic workup of hyperandrogenism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, premature adrenarche, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
