BUTRALIN Usage And Synthesis
DescriptionButralin is a pre-emergence herbicide and growth inhibiting substance. It has a low aqueous solubility and is non-volatile. It tends not to be persistent in soils. Its persistent in water systems will depend upon local conditions. Toxicity to biodiversity tends to be moderate to high. It is moderately toxic to mammals if ingested and is an irritant.
Chemical PropertiesButralin is a yelloworange crystalline solid or liquid. Commercial product is available as an emulsifiable concentrate.
UsesHerbicide.
Production MethodsCommercial production of butralin, typically, involves several key chemical and formulation steps to ensure its effectiveness and stability. The synthesis begins with the nitration of aniline derivatives to produce the dinitroaniline core structure. This is followed by alkylation, where a sec-butyl group is introduced to form butralin. Once synthesised, the technical-grade compound undergoes formulation into a suspension concentrate.
DefinitionChEBI: Butralin is a C-nitro compound.
Agricultural UsesHerbicide; plant growth regulator: Not approved for use in EU countries. Actively registered for use in the U.S. Butralin is used as a plant growth regulator on tobacco after the tobacco is topped. All tobacco is topped to stimulate desirable chemical and physical characteristics but it also stimulates the growth of suckers. All uses on food crops were canceled in January, 1991, and all uses on turf and ornamental grasses were voluntarily canceled in March, 1997. It may be used on food crops, broadleaf weeds and ornamentals in some countries. Butralin has been found effective in destroying opium poppy crops.

Mechanism of actionSelective absorbed by germinating seedlings. Microtubule assembly inhibition

UN3082 Environmentally hazardous substances, liquid, n.o.s., Hazard class: 9; Labels: 9—Miscellaneous hazardous material, Technical Name Required. UN3077 Environmentally hazardous substances, solid, n.o.s., Hazard class: 9; Labels: 9—Miscellaneous hazardous material, Technical Name Required
IncompatibilitiesIncompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, epoxides
Waste DisposalDo not discharge into drains or sewers. Dispose of waste material as hazardous waste using a licensed disposal contractor to an approved landfill. Contact a licensed disposal facility about surplus andnonrecyclable solutions. Burn in a chemical incinerator equipped with an afterburner and scrubber. Extra care must be exercised as the material in an organic solvent is highly flammable. Consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices. Incineration with effluent gas scrubbing is recommended. Containers must be disposed of properly by following package label directions or by contacting your local or federal environmental control agency, or by contacting your regional EPA office. Do not reuse container.
