General DescriptionAdrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is a 303-amino acid hormone protein, which is located at human chromosome 2p23.3.
Biochem/physiol ActionsAdrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulates melanocortin receptor (MC1R to MC5R).It is implicated in the production of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Hypomethylation of ACTH promoter region in thymic carcinoids is associated with ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone syndrome. Mutations in this gene are associated with aberrant fusion protein and impairing melanocortin signaling in hypoadrenalism. Dysregulation of ACTH leads to Cushing disease.

BackgroundAdrenocorticotropic hormone, as its name implies, stimulates the adrenal cortex. More specifically, it stimulates secretion of glucocorticoids such as cortisol, and has little control over secretion of aldosterone, the other major steroid hormone from the adrenal cortex. Stimulates secretion of adrenal corticosteroids and induces growth of adrenal cortex. ACTH also called Tetracosactide directly activates G-proteins. A stimulator of adenylate cyclase and cAMP formation.
