| | Vinylbenzyl chloride Usage And Synthesis |
| Preparation | A mixture of geranyl diphenyl phosphate (3.23 g, 8.7 mmol) and lithium chloride (0.64 g, 15.1 mmol) in dimethylformamide (15 ml) was stirred at room temperature. After about 10 minutes, a white precipitate of lithium diphenyl phosphate formed. The mixture was allowed to stand overnight. The mixture was then poured into water (100 ml), and the product was extracted with diethyl ether (3 × 30 ml). The extracts were combined, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated. The residue was purified by distillation to give the final product, Vinylbenzyl chloride. | | Chemical Properties | Vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) is also called (chloromethyl)ethenylbenzene or α-chloromethylstyrene. It is a difunctional monomer with both a polymerizable double bond and a benzylic chlorine, and is an isomeric mixture made by the chlorination of VT. VBC has a high boiling point(98.9 ℃ at 1.3 kPa) and low flammability. | | Uses | Vinylbenzyl chloride can be transformed into a high molecular mass homopolymer, will copolymerize with many other monomers, and is used as comonomer in a variety of specialty plastics. It is also possible to carry out reactionson the chloromethyl group, either before or after polymerization. | | Uses | Vinylbenzyl Chloride can be used for acrylic emulsion pressure-sensitive adhesive composition. | | Uses | Vinylbenzyl chloride can be used as organic synthesis intermediate and pharmaceutical intermediate, mainly used in laboratory research and development process and chemical production process. | | Toxics Screening Level | An ITSL of 2 μg/m3 for Vinyl Benzyl Chloride was set based on an unpublished study by DOW. |
