| | 9-Heptadecanol Usage And Synthesis |
| Description | 9-Heptadecanol, or 9-Hydroxy-heptadecan, is a naturally occurring fatty alcohol derived from the oxidation of 9-hexadecenoic acid, commonly found in vegetable oils. It possesses several characteristics, including being a colorless, odorless, and waxy solid at room temperature, with a melting point of around 65° C. It is a significant component in the cuticular waxes of various plants and is a valuable intermediate compound in synthesizing other chemicals. | | Uses | Heptadecan-9-ol (9-Heptadecanol) is a lipid with a secondary hydroxyl group and two non-polar tails. | | Synthesis | Under the protection of argon, ethyl formate (7.4 g, 0.1 mol) was dissolved in 200 mL of anhydrous tetrahydrofuran, cooled down to -78 C, slowly added n-octylmagnesium bromide (50 mL, 2 mol/L), the droplet was completed and then gradually raised to room temperature, the reaction was carried out for 12 h. After finishing the reaction, the solution was treated with saturated aqueous ammonium chloride, extracted by dichloromethane, dried with MgSO4 and spun-drying to obtain the white color. The solid was 9-heptadecanol. The results of 1HNMR, 13CNMR, MS and elemental analysis showed that the obtained compound was the target product. |
