The general procedure for the synthesis of 1-benzyl-4-bromobenzene and 1-benzyl-2-bromobenzene from 4-bromophenylboronic acid and benzyl chloride was as follows: to a 10 mL reaction tube fitted with a magnetic stirrer were added (4-bromophenyl)boronic acid (201 mg, 1.0 mmol), lithium tertiary-butanol (80 mg, 1.0 mmol), trifluorotoluene (2 mL) and benzyl chloride (63 mg, 0.5 mmol). After sealing the reaction tube, it was placed in an oil bath at 100 °C and reacted under magnetic stirring for 24 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and the organic solvent was removed by rotary evaporator. The crude product was purified by column chromatography to give a mixture of 1-benzyl-4-bromobenzene and 1-benzyl-2-bromobenzene (82 mg, 63% yield). The mixture was a colorless oily liquid.
