In a 200 mL round bottom flask, 4-methoxy-3-hydroxyacetophenone (4.66 g, 28.1 mmol, 1.0 eq.) and potassium carbonate (3.89 g, 28.1 mmol, 1.0 eq.) were added and dissolved in 50 mL of acetone. After stirring for 30 minutes at room temperature, benzyl bromide (5 mL, 29.4 mmol, 1.0 eq.) was slowly added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with 150 mL of pure water, and then extracted with chloroform (100 mL x 4). The organic layers were combined, dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. The concentrate was recrystallized with 3 mL of ethyl acetate, filtered and dried under vacuum to obtain the first batch of crystals. The mother liquor was further concentrated, recrystallized with 0.5 mL of ethyl acetate, filtered and dried in vacuum to obtain the second batch of crystals. Coral-like crystals of 1-(3-(benzyloxy)-4-methoxyphenyl)ethanone (compound IV1) were finally obtained, yield: 6.69 g (26.1 mmol, 93% yield).
