| Synthesis | Step 2: Dissolve 5-methyl-3-pyridine methanol (10 mmol) in 10 mL of 40% aqueous hydrobromic acid and react at reflux for 5 h. The reaction was monitored by TLC or LC-MS. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was heated to remove the solvent (water and excess hydrobromic acid) by evaporation until the mixture became viscous. After cooling, acetone was added to the mixture to precipitate the product, the solid was collected by filtration and dried to give 3-(bromomethyl)-5-methylpyridine hydrobromide in up to 80% yield. | | References | [1] Patent: WO2012/97196, 2012, A1.
