| Chemical Properties | Light yellow transparent liquid | | Uses | Intermediates of Liquid Crystals | | Synthesis | GENERAL PROCEDURE: The reaction was carried out in a magnetically stirred circular three-necked flask equipped with a condenser, which was placed in a thermostatic oil bath. To a well stirred mixed solution of 4-pentylphenylacetylene (2 mmol) and H2O (8 mmol) was added zeolite (H-type, 100 mg) and the reaction mixture was stirred and reacted at 100 °C. The reaction progress was monitored by TLC and after complete disappearance of 4-pentylphenylacetylene or for a predetermined time, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and diluted with ethyl acetate. The catalyst was separated by filtration and the solvent was subsequently evaporated under reduced pressure to give the crude product. The crude product was further purified by silica gel column chromatography (100-200 mesh) to give pure p-pentyl acetophenone.
