Methylamine (25% aqueous, 10 mL, 63 mmol) was added slowly and dropwise to a dichloromethane (15 mL) suspension of 4-chloro-3-nitropyridine (2 g, 12.6 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to 40 °C and stirred continuously for 1 hour. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was slowly poured into water (20 mL) and the resulting precipitate was collected by filtration and dried under vacuum to afford the target compound 4-methylamino-3-nitropyridine (1.9 g, 98% yield) as a yellow solid. The product was analyzed by LC-MS (ESI) and showed m/z: 154 (M + 1)+.
