| Chemical Properties | White solid | | Uses | Methyl α-aminoisobutyrate is used as a specific substrate of amino acid transport system and in studies on amino acid transport systems. | | Synthesis | 1. 2-Amino-2-methylpropionic acid (10 g, 96.9 mmol) and methanol (330 ml) were added to a reaction vial.
2. The reaction vial was placed in an ice bath and thionyl chloride (17.68 ml, 242.25 mmol) was slowly added dropwise.
3. After the dropwise addition was completed, the ice bath was removed and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours.
4. After completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by vacuum distillation.
5. The residue was dried in an oven at 60 °C to give methyl 2-amino-2-methylpropionate hydrochloride as a white solid (14.59 g, 94.9 mmol, 98% yield). 6. The product was analyzed by 1H NMR.
6.
