Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic derived from Pseudomonas fluorescens. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, including impetigo and other skin conditions caused by susceptible bacteria. Mupirocin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, making it an effective treatment against a broad range of Gram-positive bacteria.

Function
Mupirocin functions by binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme critical for protein synthesis. This action prevents bacteria from producing proteins essential for growth and replication, ultimately leading to their death. It is particularly effective against Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Applications

1. Topical Treatment for Skin Infections: Used to treat minor skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and infected wounds.
