Phenacetin

Application:

1. Analgesic (Pain Relief): Phenacetin was primarily used as an analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer) in the past. It was commonly found in over-the-counter pain relief medications and was effective in alleviating mild to moderate pain.

2. Antipyretic: Phenacetin was also used to reduce fever in patients. It acted by lowering body temperature through its antipyretic properties.

3. Combination Products: Phenacetin was often included as an ingredient in combination products along with other medications like aspirin or caffeine to enhance their pain-relieving effects. These combination products were used for the relief of various types of pain, including headaches and menstrual cramps.

4. Discontinued Use: Phenacetin's use as a pain reliever and antipyretic has been largely discontinued due to concerns about its safety. Prolonged and high-dose use of Phenacetin was associated with the risk of kidney damage and the development of a condition called analgesic nephropathy. As a result, Phenacetin has been withdrawn from many markets and is no longer recommended for use.
