| Description | Propanil is a selective amide herbicide, mainly used in rice fields to control barnyard grass and other gramineous weeds as well as some broadleaf weeds. Propanil exerts its herbicidal effect by inhibiting photosynthesis and related enzyme activities in weeds, and has a broad history of application in rice-growing areas, serving as an important tool in agricultural weed management. |
| In vitro | Method: Freshly isolated renal cortical cells from male Fischer 344 rats were suspended at approximately 4×10^6 cells/mL and exposed to propanil at 0.1–5.0 mM for 15–120 min. Cytotoxicity and cell viability were evaluated to determine whether propanil itself, rather than only its hydrolysis products, was nephrotoxic. Result: Propanil was cytotoxic at concentrations above 0.5 mM after 120 min; 1.0 mM caused significant toxicity at 60 and 120 min. The data showed that propanil itself can directly injure renal cortical cells and that hydrolysis is not required for nephrotoxicity.[1] |
| In vivo | Method: Whole Daphnia magna were exposed to propanil in 24- and 48-h acute lethality tests and in a 21-day chronic test at 0.07, 0.10, 0.21, or 0.55 mg/L. Survival, growth, reproduction, filtration, and ingestion were evaluated. Result: The 24- and 48-h LC50 values were 43.74 and 5.01 mg/L, respectively. Chronic development and reproduction were more sensitive endpoints than survival, and sublethal exposure altered feeding-related functions.[2] |
