1-Bromopropane vs 2-Bromopropane

Jun 23,2026

1-Bromopropane is characterized by low ozone depletion potential, high volatility, and non-flammability, and is mainly used as a cleaning agent and solvent. Especially after 2-bromopropane was phased out due to its reproductive toxicity, it has become an important industrial alternative. 1-Bromopropane is widely used as a cleaning agent for electronic components, precision optical instruments, and aerospace parts, and as a solvent for adhesives in the manufacture of foam plastics and furniture.

1-Bromopropane

2-Bromopropane was initially used as a substitute for ozone-depleting solvents in South Korea and Japan. However, after its reproductive and hematopoietic toxicity was confirmed, its isomer, 1-bromopropane, was used as a new alternative. Currently, this substance is banned in the workplace.

Toxicity Differences

Both 1-Bromopropane and 2-Bromopropane are harmful to humans, mainly in terms of neurotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, hematologic toxicity, mutagenicity, and other toxicities. See the table below for details[1-2]:

Toxicity type1-Bromopropane2-Bromopropane
NeurotoxicityExtremely high. Much stronger than 2-bromopropane. Accompanied by severe neuropathy, manifested as hindlimb paralysis, decreased grip strength, slowed motor nerve conduction velocity, prolonged distal latency, axonal swelling, and central nervous system depression.Milderly peripheral nerve changes, not involving the central nervous system.
Reproductive toxicityIt has reproductive toxicity, but its target cells differ from those of 2-bromopropane. 1-bromopropane primarily interferes with sperm production (affecting Sertoli cells) and female follicle development (affecting antral follicles and developing follicles), reducing female fertility. It has reproductive toxicity. 2-bromopropane directly attacks oocytes in spermatogonia and primordial follicles, leading to spermatogenic cell loss and reduced follicle count. Manifestations include oligospermia, amenorrhea, and anemia.
Hematologic toxicityNo definite hematologic toxicity was observed even at high concentrations. It exhibits significant myelotoxicity and pancytopenia; reduces hematocrit; causes bone marrow hypoplasia, with replacement by adipose tissue.
Mutagenicity and otherCauses hepatocellular degeneration and increased kidney weight2-Bromopropane has higher mutagenicity than 1-bromopropane
