Why does myrcene become thick during storage?

Jun 24,2026

Because its molecule contains highly reactive conjugated double bonds, myrcene undergoes auto-oxidation when exposed to air, light, or iron ions, initiating a chain-like self-polymerization reaction that produces a viscous, paint-like resin. Therefore, myrcene should be stored at low temperatures, in sealed containers, and protected from light.
