Yield:-

Reaction Conditions:

with potassium hydroxide in methanol;water;

Steps:

7 2-methyl-5-thiazole-acetic acid

EXAMPLE 7 2-methyl-5-thiazole-acetic acid A mixture of 2 g of ethyl 2-methyl-5-thiazole-acetate and a solution of 2 g of potassium hydroxide in 10 ml of methanol was stirred for 2 hours and was then evaporated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in water and sulfur dioxide was bubbled through the solution until the pH became acidic. The solution was saturated with sodium chloride and was then extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic extracts were washed with water, dried and evaporated to dryness to obtain 1.7 g of a yellow solid. The product was dissolved in methanol and the solution was treated with activated carbon, filtered and evaporated to dryness to obtain 1.7 g of raw product which was crystallized from isopropanol to obtain 1.4 g of 2-methyl-5-thiazole-acetic acid melting at 144°C.
