Stage #2: with hydrogenchloride in ethyl acetate;

Lithium hydroxide (1.45 g, 34.5 mmol) was added to a solution of dihydroquinoline ester a (1.50 g, 6.91 mmol) in THF (40 mL), followed by water (10 mL). The mixture was stirred at RT for 16 h. It was concentrated in vacuo, diluted with EtOAc (100 mL) and 0.5 N HCl (100 mL). A white solid precipitated and was collected by filtration, washed with water. The EtOAc was separated, dried (MgSO4), concentrated in vacuo to afford a white solid product. A combined yields of 1.41 g (100%) of dihydroquinoline acid b as a white solid, which was used with out further purification.
