Steps:
To a stirring mixture of 4-bromo-1-naphthol (S1, 3.85 g, 17.3 mmol) and imidazole (1.43 g, 21.0 mmol) in DMF (35.0 mL) was added tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (2.86 g, 19.0 mmol) at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was allowed to room temperature. After 2 h, the resulting mixture was poured into H2O and extracted with Et2O (twice). The combined organic layers were washed with brine and dried over anhydrous MgSO4. The solvents were removed in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash column chromatography on silica gel (eluent: hexane-EtOAc = 50:1 to 30:1) to give S2 (5.46 g, 16.2 mmol, 94% yield).
